SportsFoot and ankle injuries among young athletes tend to increase during the fall sports season. Football, soccer and basketball are the sports most likely to lead to sprains, broken bones and other problems. Follow these six tips to help protect your children from serious foot and ankle injuries this fall:

  1. Treat foot and ankle injuries right away. What seems like a sprain is not always a sprain. In addition to cartilage injuries, your child might have injured other bones in the foot without knowing it. Schedule an appointment with our office if you suspect your child has a foot or ankle injury. The sooner treatment starts, the sooner long-term instability or arthritis can be prevented and the sooner your child can get back into the game.
  2. Have a foot and ankle surgeon check old sprains before the season starts. A checkup at our office can reveal whether your child’s previously injured foot or ankle might be vulnerable to sprains and could possibly benefit from wearing a supportive brace during competition.
  3. Buy the right shoe for the sport. Different sports require different shoe gear. Players should not mix baseball cleats with football shoes. 
  4. Children should start the season with new shoes. Old shoes can wear down and become uneven on the bottom, causing the ankle to tilt because the foot cannot lie flat.
  5. Check playing fields for dips, divots and holes. Most  sports-related foot and ankle sprains are caused by jumping and running on uneven surfaces. This is why some surgeons recommend parents walk the field, especially when children compete in nonprofessional settings like public parks, for spots that could catch a player’s foot. Alert coaching officials to any irregularities.                               
  6. Encourage stretching and warmup exercises. Calf stretches and light jogging before competition help warm up ligaments and blood vessels, reducing the risk for foot and ankle injuries.

Flip-flops are a common footwear selection for many Americans during the summer. However, these shoes can be very problematic for your feet. While flip-flops may be a better choice compared to walking barefoot, they provide no arch or heel support for your feet. As a result, you may suffer from issues such as plantar fasciitis and stress fractures. If you still choose to wear these shoes despite the dangers they put your feet at risk for, you should choose a pair that are made out of soft leather. If you have an old pair of flip-flops in your closet, you should inspect them and see if they are still fit to wear. Flip-flops that are worn out should be thrown out immediately since they can easily cause injury.

A 35-year-old Australian woman was left unable to walk due to over wearing skinny jeans that had cut off her circulation resulting in extreme weakness in her ankles. The woman was helping a friend move out of her apartment and had spent much of the day squatting, restricting proper blood flow throughout her legs. The woman felt burning, numbness, and tingling in her legs that resulted in her falling down and not being able to get up for a few hours until she was found. Her legs ended up becoming so swollen that doctors had to cut the pants off of her and she could not properly move her ankles, feet, and toes.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. It usually restricts the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development.

It can also cause:

-muscle pain      -numbness in legs

-cramps               -skin discoloration

-weakness          -slower nail & hair growth

-stiffness             -erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes and or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, or who are over 50.

 Rumer Willis, winner of Dancing with the Stars season 20, recently sustained a stress fracture in her left foot keeping her from performing for the remainder of the Dancing With the Stars Live Tour. The 26-year-old actress has been seen out and about sporting a boot to protect the injury of her lower extremity. “I have to hang up my dancing shoes for a little bit because of a few stress fractures in my foot but it’s not going to stop me from singing for you guys on the #DWTSlivetour,” Willis explained.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

The Stress Fractures occur on the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  Then the feet and ankles lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground.  Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center surgeon, Dr. Timothy Miller, recently streamed an Achilles tendon surgery on the video-streaming app Periscope. Dr. Miller is one of the first among many surgeons using the app hoping that it will help advance medical education. In this day and age of medical education, students and residents are all equally busy which makes the viewing of cases like these increasingly difficult. The streaming session reeled in nearly 170 live viewers, was viewed more than 800 times after during the 24 hours Periscope archived the surgery, and with the help of an assistant in the operating room, five to six questions were answered during the procedure.

What is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible.
