The Problem with Toenail Fungus
Many patients are sensitive about the appearance and smell of their feet. Toenail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is one of those foot conditions that you definitely want to avoid or treat if you want to avoid embarrassment. It causes your toes to turn yellow, thick and brittle. The toenail may chafe and peel. The fungus can also cause an undesirable odor that is difficult to ignore. If it isn’t treated, the problem can propagate and spread to other toes.

Laser Toenail Fungus Treatment
There is a new treatment available for patients who have toenail fungus at Advanced Foot and Ankle Specialists in Elgin, Crystal Lake, Schaumburg, Huntley or Chicago. It is a laser treatment that heats the toenail, effectively eliminating the infection. The laser is set to target the color of the fungus—it can’t survive the laser’s light. The rest of your toenail tissue (the good part) stays healthy.

Benefits Over Traditional Treatment
The usual treatment for toenail fungus is a topical cream that you apply as prescribed. With laser treatment, you’ll enjoy these benefits:

  • No need for messy creams or daily application
  • Laser treatment is quick and painless
  • The laser is most effective at targeting the fungus while preserving good tissue
  • The results are long lasting (with creams, the problem can reoccur often)
  • You’ll have your normal, pink, healthy toenails back sooner than with traditional creams

Toenail fungus is a foot condition that many people can fall prey to. Symptoms of the condition include yellow or brown nails, nails that split or crumble, or nails that lift up from the nail bed. To avoid developing this uncomfortable and often unsightly condition, professionals recommend the following tips. Keep the toenails trimmed short to avoid debris from building up beneath the nails. Wear shoes that properly fit and that are breathable, as fungus thrives in warm and moist environments. Use antifungal sprays or powders when needed, avoid going barefoot in public facilities, and never share shoes or nail clippers.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a problem which affects many people and is hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating toenail fungus.

Antibiotics & Treatments

Lamisil – is the most commonly effective treatment for toenail fungus. It is available as an antibiotic Terbinafine tablet and cream. Terbinafine is a chemical component which kills fungal growth on the body.  Applying regular doses will gradually kill the fungal growth. It is important to keep the area clean and air free.

Talcum powder – applying powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well

Alternative Treatments

There are always surgical procedures that are available for toenail fungus. Some people would like immediate quick removal of toenail fungus. Surgeons will be able to cut through and remove the growth using laser surgery. It is important not to try and remove it yourself. Once removed, your old shoes will need to be replaced to avoid reinfection.

Have you spent more money than you'd like on useless toenail fungus medications? Over-the-counter medications are often ineffective when stubborn fungus is a problem, but laser therapy stops fungal growth with just one treatment. Doctors Gary Ochwat, Ronald Clemente, Craig Halihan and Michael Williams explain how Crystal Lake residents can benefit from laser toenail fungus treatment.Toenail Fungus

Why over-the-counter products don't always help

Those drugstore anti-fungal products might help you get rid of mild to moderate toenail fungus, but often have little effect on severe cases. Over-the-counter products only reach the top of the nail and do nothing to kill the fungus that lurks under the nail. If the products do offer some improvement, chances are that it doesn't last for long. Even oral anti-fungal medications prescribed by your doctor may not help, and those medications often have unpleasant side effects.

Laser treatment is a better option

Traditional toenail fungus treatment often takes months, but laser treatment quickly gets to the source of the problem. Foot doctors use a thin laser beam to precisely target the infection during a treatment session that takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The targeted laser beam kills the fungus without damaging surrounding tissues. Laser therapy is so effective because the pigment in the fungus absorbs the light from the laser and creates heat that kills the infection for good. Best of all, laser treatment has no uncomfortable side effects. Although the fungi don't like the laser, all you'll feel is a slight warming under your toe or possibly a mild pinprick sensation.

Results are long-lasting

Once the fungus is killed, it doesn't come back. Although the fungi die after treatment, it does take a while for a completely healthy nail to appear. During the course of a few months, you'll see the new, fungus-free nail gradually start to grow.

If you live in the Crystal Lake area and are tired of looking at your yellow toenails, find out how laser toenail fungus treatments can help you. Call (815) 356-0500 to schedule an appointment with Doctors Gary Ochwat, Ronald Clemente, Craig Halihan or Michael Williams.
